Cassis is the French word for black currant, a plant which bears beautiful dark purple berries.

The colour purple has an illustrious history. In ancient times, purple was nearly impossible to produce naturally. The earliest form of purple dye was produced by squeezing shellfish called the murex sea mussel or porphura.  This elaborate process yielded the dye called Tyrian Purple.  Due to the expensive nature of how purple was created, the colour was limited to the wealthy and/or powerful.  True Tyrian purple remains a symbol of luxury and status today.

This year, purple has emerged as a significant colour trend.  It took center stage in Fall 2009, adourning fashion, fabrics, and accessories.  The trend will continue in to 2010 and beyond, bringing purple accents to the home and kitchen.
